Shakespeare's Globe Bone China Cup

Shakespeare's Globe bone china cup has been designed from original artwork by Emily Ward. All cups are printed and hand pressed in Emily's studio in the North East.

At the bottom of the bone china cup, flowers cluster in vivid tones, painted with bold strokes. The colours ripple upward, mixing purple, yellow, and pink into a lively rhythm. Paint flecks scatter freely, making the scene feels as though it is in motion.

Above this lively base, the theatre stands with calm authority. Circular and timber-framed, it reflects the Tudor style, its white plaster walls contrasted with strong wooden beams. The thatched roof, painted in warm earthy tones, glows beneath the sky. Red banners descend from the walls, giving vertical emphasis, while the gate and brick steps below invite the viewer toward the entrance.

Shakespeare's Globe

When Shakespeare and his fellow actors erected the Globe Theatre in 1599, they created not just a building but a cultural institution. The round playhouse, with its tiered galleries and standing yard, allowed Londoners of every social class to gather together and enjoy drama. The design was both practical and dynamic, placing actors on a projecting stage and surrounding them with a sea of spectators, creating an intimate and lively exchange between performance and audience.

The Globe’s history is full of drama equal to the plays performed there. Destroyed by fire in 1613, rebuilt soon after, and finally torn down by 1644, it vanished from the landscape but not from memory. Centuries later, Sam Wanamaker’s dream of rebuilding it became reality, and in 1997 the modern Globe opened just a short distance from the original site. Today it stands as a place of performance, education, and heritage, showing how Shakespeare’s work continues to unite audiences across generations.
