Shakespeare's Globe Framed Ceramic Tile
Shakespeare's Globe Framed Ceramic Tile
Shakespeare's Globe framed ceramic tile has been designed from original artwork by North East artist Emily Ward. All ceramic tiles are printed and hand pressed in Emily's art studio, where she hand finishes every tile.
Emily’s framed ceramic tile of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is filled with warm white and deep browns, its Tudor timber framing clearly defined. A golden thatched roof crowns the structure, while tall red banners hang from the walls, adding a sense of drama and vertical emphasis. The careful brushstrokes give the theatre both solidity and character, making it feel historic yet full of life.
Above the building, a soft blue sky is dotted with pastel flecks of colour, introducing a playful quality. In the foreground, wildflowers fill the base of the wall art. Painted in loose strokes of pink, yellow, and purple, they create a lively rhythm of colour that contrasts with the steady form of the theatre.

Shakespeare's Globe
The Globe Theatre , built in 1599, was a defining achievement of Shakespeare’s company. Using timber from the earlier Theatre playhouse, the actors created a venue that could showcase their repertory to London’s growing public. Its design, a circular amphitheatre with a thrust stage, invited direct contact between actors and audience, making performances dynamic and immersive.
Despite its success, the Globe’s history was short-lived. A fire destroyed it in 1613, though it was rebuilt quickly, only to face closure during the Puritan suppression of theatres in 1642. By 1644 it had been dismantled entirely. Still, the theatre’s cultural weight endured, and in 1997 it was rebuilt on the South Bank. The new Globe is both a performance venue and a tribute, blending historical authenticity with modern craft to ensure Shakespeare’s legacy remains accessible to contemporary audiences.
