Trafalgar Square Framed Ceramic Tile

Trafalgar Square framed ceramic tile has been designed from original artwork by North East artist Emily Ward. All ceramic tiles are printed and hand pressed in Emily's art studio, where she hand finishes every tile.

Emily's framed art ceramic tile highlights the fountains at the centre of Trafalgar Square. The water arcs upwards in clean lines, breaking into droplets that are captured against a backdrop of warm golden stone and pale blue sky. The surrounding architecture provides a clear structure, with the spire rising beyond to balance the composition.

The use of turquoise and blue tones in the water contrasts with the softer pinks and purples above. Brushwork is confident and fluid, giving the fountains a sense of motion, while the buildings remain solid but softened by colour. The result is a balanced and uplifting scene.

Trafalgar Square

The origins of Trafalgar Square lie in the 1840s, when Charles Barry redesigned the area to create a monumental public square. It was named after the Battle of Trafalgar, the 1805 naval clash in which Admiral Nelson secured a decisive victory against Napoleon’s forces. Nelson’s Column was raised as its focal point, crowned with a statue of the admiral and later guarded by four bronze lions that became iconic in their own right. The design incorporated fountains and statues, creating a balance of grandeur and openness.

Since its creation, Trafalgar Square has stood as one of the city’s great civic spaces. It has been the site of rallies, vigils, and political gatherings as well as parades and celebrations. People assemble there to voice their concerns, honour national events, and join in collective festivities. The National Gallery’s commanding presence on its northern side enhances its cultural dimension, making the square a nexus of art, history, and community life in central London.
