Emily’s art presents Trafalgar Square in a highly atmospheric, almost dreamlike style, with lots of expressive colour. The sky is awash with soft blends of violet, lavender, pink, and pale blue, creating a luminous backdrop that feels calm yet dramatic. These cool tones contrast beautifully with the warm honey and golden ochres of the surrounding buildings, which glow gently as if lit from within.

In the foreground, the fountains are rendered in rich turquoise, teal, and deep blue, with splashes of bright white suggesting sparkling water droplets caught mid-air.

Hints of emerald green appear in the sculpted figures, echoing the cool palette of the water. The combination of warm architectural colours and cool, flowing blues and purples gives this art greeting card a warming and fun feel.

Trafalgar Square

The mid-nineteenth century saw the creation of Trafalgar Square, designed by Charles Barry to commemorate Admiral Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar in 1805. Its centrepiece, Nelson’s Column, dominates the space, a monument both to naval heroism and to Britain’s imperial confidence. The square’s fountains, statues, and monumental steps gave London a civic space on a scale comparable to European capitals.

Beyond its commemorative origins, Trafalgar Square soon came to embody the spirit of public assembly. Crowds gathered there to protest wars, demand social change, and celebrate collective achievements. Its openness and centrality made it an enduring symbol of civic freedom as well as national pride. Today it is as much a place for demonstrations and festivals as it is a memorial, with the National Gallery and surrounding streets reinforcing its place at the cultural heart of London.
