The Bowes Museum
The Bowes Museum is a magnificent French styled art gallery in the picturesque market town of Barnard Castle in County Durham.
Philanthropists John Bowes a businessman and the son of an Earl, met Joséphine when he bought the Théâtre De Variétés in Paris, where she was an actress. They married in 1852, Josephine had a passion for collecting fine art and became a patron of the arts. She decided to sell John's wedding gift to her, their home in France, to start their Museum project so they could share their love of art with the residents of Teesdale, near John’s family home. Sadly neither lived to see the opening of the museum to the public.
The magnificent building was designed by John Edward Watson and Jules Pellechet and opened in 1892.
