Ripon Cathedral
Ripon Cathedral
is a Grade 1 listed building in North Yorkshire and is steeped in history. The first building on the site was an Anglo-Saxon timber church founded by Celtic monks from Melrose Abbey in Scotland. This was replaced by a stone church dedicated to St Peter by St Wilfrid in 672, who brought stonemasons, plasterers and glaziers over from France and Italy to work on the building.
The magnificent early English Gothic styled medieval cathedral is home to an Anglo-Saxon crypt which dates back to 672AD.
Some of the highlights of the building are the fourteenth century sedilia and a fourteenth century library. The library originally a chapel, is now used to home to the cathedral Treasury which includes The Ripon Jewel, a Saxon roundel discovered near the cathedral in 1976
