Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum
was constructed during the Victorian era, with building work beginning in 1873 and finishing in 1881. The museum was designed by the architect Alfred Waterhouse, who created an imposing Romanesque-style structure influenced by continental European architecture.
Terracotta was chosen as the main building material because it was durable and resistant to the effects of London’s polluted air, while also allowing for intricate decorative detail. The exterior and interior are richly adorned with sculpted plants and animals, reflecting the museum’s focus on nature and science and making the building itself an important part of the visitor experience.
