Harland and Wolff Cranes Ceramic Tile with Easel

Harland Cranes ceramic tile with easel is by North East artist Emily Ward. The ceramic tile has been created from original art by Emily and is hand pressed locally in her art studio.

Emily Ward’s artwork presents a cheerful and imaginative depiction of the iconic Harland and Wolff cranes, Samson and Goliath, standing tall against a clear blue sky. Painted in their signature bright yellow, the towering structures dominate this art ceramic tile with easel with bold presence, each proudly bearing the “H & W” logo.

In the foreground, a field of colourful wildflowers stretches across the base of the art gift painted with expressive splashes and dots of pink, yellow, blue and white. The contrast between the heavy, engineered forms of the cranes and the soft, lively wildflowers creates a striking visual balance. Light speckles of paint dance across the canvas, adding a whimsical, uplifting tone.

Harland Cranes

The Harland and Wolff cranes , known as Samson and Goliath, are among the most iconic landmarks in Belfast, symbolising the city’s proud shipbuilding heritage. Towering over the skyline of the Titanic Quarter, these massive yellow gantry cranes were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s. They remain a striking reminder of the industrial power of Harland and Wolff, the shipyard famously responsible for building the RMS Titanic.

Standing at 106 and 96 metres tall, Goliath and Samson are not only engineering marvels but also cultural icons, representing the resilience, history, and identity of Belfast. They are named Goliath and Samson after two powerful biblical figures, symbolising strength and might fitting qualities for such enormous structures. The first crane, Goliath, was completed in 1969, followed by Samson in 1974. Despite the order of their construction, Samson is actually the taller of the two.
