Cranbrook Windmill Framed Ceramic Tile

Cranbrook Windmill framed ceramic tile has been designed from original artwork by North East artist Emily Ward. All ceramic tiles are printed and hand pressed in Emily's art studio, where she hand finishes every tile.

Cranbrook Windmill is shown in a colourful and expressive style on Emily’s framed ceramic tile. The mill itself, painted in soft shades of cream and grey, rises gracefully with its sails reaching across the sky. Above, the backdrop is alive with tones of blue and purple, dotted with splashes of pink, yellow, and violet that give the sky a sense of movement and energy

In the foreground, a lively meadow of wildflowers spreads across the ceramic tile, created with playful strokes and dots of purple, blue, green, and yellow.

The contrast between the solid, historic windmill and the bright, animated colours around it gives the piece a joyful quality, celebrating both heritage and the beauty of nature.

Cranbrook Windmill

Cranbrook Windmill, more commonly known as Union Mill, is a defining feature of Kent and the tallest surviving smock mill in Britain. Built in 1814, it rises more than 70 feet and was originally driven by wind to grind corn into flour for the surrounding community. Its striking white timber frame, narrowing upwards to a cap topped with sweeping sails, makes it a prominent landmark on Cranbrook’s skyline.

Now carefully maintained and still in working condition, the mill allows visitors to explore its traditional machinery and discover the important part it played in local industry. Today, Union Mill stands as both a treasured attraction and a lasting symbol of Cranbrook’s rural heritage and craftsmanship.
