Carlisle Castle Framed Ceramic Tile
Carlisle Castle Ceramic Tile
Carlisle Castle framed ceramic tile has been designed from original art by North East artist Emily Ward. All ceramic tiles are printed and hand pressed in Emily's art studio, where she hand finishes every tile.
Emily’s art ceramic framed tile offers a bold and colourful interpretation of Carlisle Castle, combining the strength of its medieval walls with a lively, modern energy. The castle’s sturdy stone gatehouse is shown in warm, earthy hues, emphasising its centuries old role as a fortress.
The sky is filled with radiant shades of pink, orange, and peach, casting a dramatic and dreamlike glow across the scene. The foreground bursts with vibrant wildflowers, their bright splashes of pink, yellow, blue, and purple scattered in playful, dotted strokes that add rhythm and movement.
The castle’s enduring solidity with the joyful, expressive colours of the landscape creates a powerful yet uplifting image.

Carlisle Castle
Carlisle Castle, located in Cumbria near the English-Scottish border, is a fortress with over 900 years of history and one of the most important strongholds in northern England. First built in 1092 by William II, the son of William the Conqueror, it has served as a royal residence, a military stronghold, and a prison. Its strategic position made it central to centuries of conflict between England and Scotland, including the turbulent Border Wars.
The castle is notable for its massive stone keep, medieval walls, and later additions that reflect its continuous military use up until the 20th century. It also has strong associations with Mary, Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned there in 1568. Today, Carlisle Castle is managed by English Heritage and remains a powerful symbol of the region’s turbulent past, offering visitors a chance to explore its towers, dungeons, and rich history.
