Carlisle Castle Bone China Cup

Carlisle Castle bone china Cup has been designed from original art by Emily Ward. All cups are printed and hand pressed in Emily's studio in the North East.

Emily’s art cup offers a bold and colourful interpretation of Carlisle Castle, combining the strength of its medieval walls with a lively, modern energy. The castle’s sturdy stone gatehouse is shown in warm, earthy hues, emphasising its centuries-old role as a fortress.

The sky is filled with radiant shades of pink, orange, and peach, casting a dramatic and dreamlike glow across the scene. The foreground bursts with vibrant wildflowers, their bright splashes of pink, yellow, blue, and purple scattered in playful, dotted strokes that add rhythm and movement.

The juxtaposition of the castle’s enduring solidity with the joyful, expressive colours of the landscape creates a powerful yet uplifting image.

Carlisle Castle

Carlisle Castle, situated in Cumbria near the border with Scotland, is a historic fortress that has stood for over nine centuries. Built in 1092 by William II, the son of William the Conqueror, it has played many roles throughout its long history, serving as a royal residence, a defensive stronghold, and even a prison. Its strategic position made it a focal point during the centuries of conflict between England and Scotland, especially during the Border Wars.

Key features include its commanding stone keep, extensive medieval walls, and later military structures that highlight its continued use up until the 20th century. The castle is also closely associated with Mary, Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned there in 1568. Today, managed by English Heritage, Carlisle Castle invites visitors to discover its towers, passageways, and stories of power and conflict that have shaped the region.
