Carlisle Castle Canvas Print

Carlisle Castle art print has been produced from original art by North East artist Emily Ward. Emily hand finishes each canvas print with her characteristic splashes of paint making it individual to you.

Emily’s art canvas print presents a striking and imaginative view of Carlisle Castle, blending its historic strength with a burst of colour and energy. The castle’s solid stone walls and imposing gatehouse are depicted in warm earthy tones, standing as a reminder of its long and turbulent past.

Above, the sky glows with vibrant shades of pink, orange, and peach, creating a dramatic, almost dreamlike atmosphere.

In the foreground, a field of vivid wildflowers explodes with splashes of pink, yellow, blue, and purple, painted in dotted and splattered strokes that bring a sense of movement and joy. The contrast between the sturdy medieval fortress and the playful, colourful foreground gives the scene both power and vibrancy, celebrating Carlisle Castle as a monument of history.

Carlisle Castle

Carlisle Castle, standing in Cumbria close to the English-Scottish border, is a remarkable fortress with more than 900 years of history. Originally built in 1092 by William II, son of William the Conqueror, it has served many roles over the centuries, including royal residence, garrison, and prison. Its location made it a key stronghold during the long conflicts between England and Scotland, particularly throughout the Border Wars.

The castle is distinguished by its imposing stone keep, sturdy medieval walls, and later military additions that reflect its use right up to the 20th century. It is also famously linked to Mary, Queen of Scots, who was held there in 1568. Now under the care of English Heritage, Carlisle Castle offers visitors the chance to step into a turbulent past, exploring its towers, dungeons, and centuries of fascinating history.
