Carlisle Castle Tile with Easel
Carlisle Castle Ceramic Tile with Easel
Carlisle Castle ceramic tile with easel is by North East artist Emily Ward. The ceramic tile has been created from original art by Emily and is hand pressed locally in her art studio.
Emily’s art gift presents a striking and imaginative view of Carlisle Castle, blending its historic strength with a burst of colour and energy. The castle’s solid stone walls and imposing gatehouse are depicted in warm earthy tones, standing as a reminder of its long and turbulent past.
Above, the sky glows with vibrant shades of pink, orange, and peach, creating a dramatic, almost dreamlike atmosphere.
In the foreground, a field of vivid wildflowers explodes with splashes of pink, yellow, blue, and purple, painted in dotted and splattered strokes that bring a sense of movement and joy. The contrast between the sturdy medieval fortress and the playful, colourful foreground gives the scene both power and vibrancy, celebrating Carlisle Castle as a monument of history.

Carlisle Castle
Carlisle Castle, located in Cumbria near the English-Scottish border, is a fortress with over 900 years of history and one of the most important strongholds in northern England. First built in 1092 by William II, the son of William the Conqueror, it has served as a royal residence, a military stronghold, and a prison. Its strategic position made it central to centuries of conflict between England and Scotland, including the turbulent Border Wars.
The castle is notable for its massive stone keep, medieval walls, and later additions that reflect its continuous military use up until the 20th century. It also has strong associations with Mary, Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned there in 1568. Today, Carlisle Castle is managed by English Heritage and remains a powerful symbol of the region’s turbulent past, offering visitors a chance to explore its towers, dungeons, and rich history.
