Beverley Minster

The market town of Beverley in the East riding of Yorkshire is home to Beverley Minster. This impressive minster is regarded as being one of the finest examples of Gothic churches in Europe.

Originally founded during the 8th century the present Minster was built in the period 1220-1425 after a fire destroyed the earlier one.

Beverley Minster was known as being a place where those needing a safe haven from alleged crimes could seek refuge and be protected. This special privilege was granted by King Athelstan in 938 after he had visited the tomb of the Bishop of York, John, who the minster is now named after.
