The Mill, Fountains Abbey

Fountains Abbey is situated near Ripon in North Yorkshire and is one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England.

The oldest building on the estate is Fountains Mill and it can be dated back to the 12th century. The mill was built by Cistercian monks to grind grain for the monastery. There were two waterwheels installed, which were run from a leat taken from the Rover Skell.

With a long history, the building has also been a monastic granary, a timber sawmill, a home for refugees and a mason’s workshop.

The mill operated until 1927 when it was closed down. It was restored in 2001 and now has an interactive exhibition.
