Smeaton's Tower Keyring

Smeaton's Tower art keyring has been designed from original artwork by Emily Ward an artist from Newcastle. This art keyring is printed and hand pressed locally in Emily's studio.

Emily’s art keyring presents Smeaton’s Tower as a joyful and atmospheric landmark set within a vibrant coastal landscape.

The sky is wide and luminous, painted in soft, swirling blues with scattered specks of light. The lighthouse rises confidently from the scene, its red and white bands bold and eye-catching, giving it a strong presence against the calm backdrop.

In the foreground, a meadow of wildflowers bursts with colour, layered in pinks, yellows, purples, and fresh greens, adding texture and warmth. Beyond the flowers, Plymouth Sound stretches out in gentle blues and greens, offering a peaceful view of the horizon.

Smeaton's Tower

Smeaton’s Tower is one of Plymouth’s most distinctive landmarks, standing prominently on the Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound. Designed by civil engineer John Smeaton and completed in 1759, the tower was originally built on the hazardous Eddystone Rocks to warn ships away from danger.

At around 72 feet tall, its solid granite structure was revolutionary for its time, using interlocking stonework to resist the force of the sea. After being replaced by a newer lighthouse, the tower was dismantled and re-erected on Plymouth Hoe, where it remains today.

While it no longer functions as a working lighthouse, it is preserved as a historic monument and popular viewpoint, celebrated for its lasting contribution to maritime safety and engineering design.
