Smeaton's Tower
Smeaton’s Tower is a well known historic landmark on Plymouth Hoe in Devon. It was first constructed in 1759 by the engineer John Smeaton on the Eddystone Rocks, where it played a crucial role in guiding ships safely through dangerous waters.
The granite tower rises to about 72 feet (22 metres) in height and was pioneering for its innovative stone construction, designed to withstand extreme sea conditions. In 1882, the lighthouse was carefully taken apart and rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe, preserving its structure and legacy.
Although it is no longer an operational lighthouse, Smeaton’s Tower
remains an important symbol of maritime history and engineering achievement.
