Smeaton's Tower
Smeaton’s Tower
is one of Plymouth’s most distinctive landmarks, standing prominently on the Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound. Designed by civil engineer John Smeaton and completed in 1759, the tower was originally built on the hazardous Eddystone Rocks to warn ships away from danger.
At around 72 feet tall, its solid granite structure was revolutionary for its time, using interlocking stonework to resist the force of the sea. After being replaced by a newer lighthouse, the tower was dismantled and re-erected on Plymouth Hoe, where it remains today.
While it no longer functions as a working lighthouse, it is preserved as a historic monument and popular viewpoint, celebrated for its lasting contribution to maritime safety and engineering design.
