Eastgate Clock, Chester

Eastgate Clock in Chester is one of the city’s best known landmarks and a striking piece of Victorian craftsmanship. Installed in 1899 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, it was built on the site of the original Roman entrance to the fortress of Deva, linking Chester’s ancient past with its later history.

The clock is set within an elaborate wrought-iron structure, decorated with gilded details and four clock faces that can be admired from every direction. Positioned above the Eastgate, it has become an enduring symbol of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben, celebrated for its beauty, heritage, and distinctive charm.
