Bury St Edmunds Abbey
Located in the heart of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, Bury St Edmunds Abbey was one of the wealthiest and most important Benedictine monasteries in medieval England. Founded in 1020 by King Cnut (Canute), it was built to house the shrine of Saint Edmund, the Anglo-Saxon King of East Anglia, whose remains attracted pilgrims from across the country.
Although much of the abbey
now stands as impressive ruins, it remains a Scheduled Monument set within the beautiful Abbey Gardens. The site played a significant role in English history, with the barons believed to have gathered here in 1214 to swear an oath that eventually led to the sealing of the Magna Carta.
Today, the magnificent ruins provide a fascinating glimpse into the abbey's former grandeur and remain one of Suffolk's most treasured historic landmarks.
