Barbican Gates, Antrim Castle
The Barbican Gates at Antrim Castle Gardens
are among the most striking surviving features of the historic estate in Antrim. Dating from the 17th century, the fortified stone gateway once formed part of the defensive entrance to Antrim Castle, the ancestral home of the Massereene family.
Built in a classic barbican style, with thick masonry walls and an arched carriageway, the structure was designed both to impress visitors and to protect the castle beyond. Although the castle itself was largely destroyed by fire in 1922, the Barbican Gates remain beautifully preserved, standing today as a dramatic architectural reminder of the estate’s former grandeur and offering visitors a tangible link to Antrim’s early modern history.
