Whitby Abbey Square Open Edition Print

Whitby Abbey square open edition print has been designed from original artwork by North East artist Emily Ward. This lovely art print is also available framed.

Emily has used purple which symbolises mystery and magic to light up the sky over these Gothic ruins.

The sky glimmers with shades of purple, blue and a hint of red which reflects across these dramatic clifftop abbey ruins. Pretty pink flowers in front of the abbey bring a warming feel to this thoughtful art print.

Whitby Abbey

The seaside town of Whitby lies on the east coast of North Yorkshire and is steeped in history.

Whitby Abbey was originally a Christian monastery built in the 7th-century and later became a Benedictine abbey. Henry VIII confiscated the abbey and all it's possessions around 1540. All that remained was the ruins.

These Gothic ruins on top of the windswept cliff have inspired many from poets, artists and writers. Bram Stoker was so taken with the atmospheric backdrop that it help him create and write Dracula in 1897. Dracula climbed the 199 steps up to the graveyard of St Mary's Church which lies in the shadow of Whitby abbey.
