The hall at Wallington
, in Northumberland, is a 17th Century country house, built in 1688 originally in a Grand Palladian style. The building was commissioned by William Blackett, a well-known local man who had a considerable fortune made from his industrial and mining ventures.
Standing guard on the approach to the hall are four huge stone griffin heads. These were purchased in Bishopsgate in London and are thought to be the ancestors of the modern day griffins which still stand watch over all roads leading into the City of London.
