The Shambles
The Shambles
is a historical street in the city of York in North Yorkshire. Known officially as just the 'Shamble', it is a narrow street that dates back to the 14th century. It was mentioned in William the Conqueror’s Doomsday Book in 1086.
Home originally to many butchers shops, each specialising in a different meat. Today there is only one butchers shop on the street but many shops still have meat hooks hanging outside.
The Shambles cobbled streets and overhanging buildings, are believed to have been the inspiration behind Diagon Alley from the movie adaptation of the Harry Potter series. There are many wizard themed shops now along this medieval street.
