The Shambles in York
The Shambles
is a historic street in York which features well preserved medieval buildings. The narrow street is lined with many timber framed buildings that overhang on the street, some of which dated back to the 14th century.
In 1885 it was believed that there was about 31 butchers shops located on the street. It was narrow by design to keep the meat out of direct sunlight.
Once known as The Great Flesh Shambles, quite possibly from the Anglo Saxon term Fleshammels which means flesh shelves, the word butchers used for the shelves that displayed their meat.
