Clifford's Tower
Clifford's Tower
is the largest remaining structure of York Castle. Originally built of timber in 1068 by William the Conqueror, it's purpose was to control northern England. It stood as a proud symbol of the power of England's medieval kings
After it was burned down in a horrible massacre in the 1190, King Henry III arranged for the rebuilding of York Castle by Master Henry the Mason in the 13th century.
By the 19th century, Clifford's Tower was all that remained of York Castle
