Sycamore Gap
Sycamore Gap was a famous and much loved spot along Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, known for the striking lone sycamore tree that stood dramatically between two rolling hills. Planted in the late nineteenth century, the tree became an iconic symbol of the Northumberland landscape and a popular destination for walkers and photographers.
Its fame grew even further after it appeared in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner.
In 2023, the tree was deliberately cut down in an act of vandalism that shocked communities across the UK and beyond, sparking widespread discussion about heritage, conservation, and the emotional connection people form with natural landmarks. Even without the tree, Sycamore Gap
remains a powerful and historic landscape along the ancient Roman wall.
