Rosedale Mines Hanging Pendant Decoration

Rosedale Mines ceramic pendant has been created from original art by North East artist Emily Ward. This lovely hanging decoration has been hand pressed locally in her studio near Newcastle.

Emily can handwrite your message on the reverse of the pendant, just add your message to the order.

Emily’s art ceramic pendant captures the historic Rosedale Mines, a former ironing mine site in North Yorkshire.

The painting features the iconic stone arches of the old kilns, set against a rolling hillside. Emily has painted the sky with soft sweeping brush strokes in light blue and white, creating the feeling of a bright and airy day.

Colourful wildflowers blend into Emily’s splashes of colour on the hillside. The sheep grazes peacefully amongst the dainty flowers and long grasses on this art canvas print.

Rosedale Mines

The Rosedale Mines are situated in the North York Moors National Park in West Yorkshire. Mining for iron began there around 1856 near Chimney Bank and the village of Rosedale Abbey.

Originally ironstone was quarried from the cliff face as the ironstone stood out on the hillside. Later the Bank Top kilns were built on the hillside with tunnels being dug into them, in an effort to refine the mining process. This process was called ‘calcining’ which was where they burnt the ore with coal to reduce its weight by up to half and remove impurities. This helped with the transportation costs.

The mining in Rosedale came to an end in 1929 after 11 million tonnes of ironstone had been taken from the valley, which was used in construction projects around the world.
