, perched on a hill overlooking the River Lune, is a striking fortress steeped in centuries of history. Built from sturdy sandstone, its walls and towers exude strength and permanence, with the imposing John O’Gaunt Gatehouse standing as a powerful symbol of medieval authority.
The castle has served not only as a defensive stronghold but also as a centre of justice, famously hosting trials such as those of the Pendle witches in the early 17th century.
The mix of battlements, turrets, and arched gateways reflects both military might and architectural grandeur, while its commanding position gives it a dramatic presence over the surrounding city.
