Fountains Abbey
and Studley Royal Park have been an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986. The impressive site includes the ruins of the largest Cistercian monastery in the UK, a splendid Georgian formal water garden, and a medieval deer park.
Situated near the town of Ripon in the Yorkshire Dales.
The Abbey, Britain’s largest monastic ruin, was founded in 1132 by thirteen Benedictine monks from St Mary’s Abbey in York. They were seeking a simpler life, and later became Cistercian monks. The abbey was named Fountains Abbey because of the springs of water that existed in the area.
