Beverley Minster

Beverley Minster is in the market town of Beverley in the East riding of Yorkshire. The impressive minster is renowned for being one of the finest examples of Gothic churches in Europe.

Having been originally founded during the 8th century the present Minster was built in the period 1220-1425 after a fire destroyed the earlier one. For over 1300 years there has been a Christian community on the site of Beverley Minster.

It was named after John the Bishop of York, who had founded a monastery on the site, he was buried in the chapel in 721. His bones still lie beneath a plaque in the nave of the present church.
