Clifford's Tower
Clifford's Tower
is the largest remaining structure of York Castle. The castle was built of timber in 1068 by William the Conqueror, it's purpose was to control northern England. This was burnt down during a massacre in 1190.
King Henry III arranged the rebuilding of York Castle in 1244. By the 19th century all that remained was, the now ruined keep of the medieval castle, known as Clifford's Tower.
Clifford's Tower gets it's name from Roger de Clifford who was executed for treason against Edward II, he was hanged in chains from the tower walls.
