Clifford's Tower
is the largest remaining building of York Castle, northern England’s greatest medieval royal fortress.
The ancient ruined keep has stood guard over the city of York from 1245 until the present day. York's iconic historical monument is steeped in a thousand years of history. The raised mound that it stands on was once the site of a timber keep that had been built by William the Conqueror. This was destroyed in 1190.
Clifford’s Tower has been a royal mint, a medieval stronghold, a Civil War garrison and a prison.
