Whitby Abbey Coaster

Local North East artist Emily Ward has created this beautiful FSC rated coaster of Whitby Abbey. The art coaster has been taken from an original painting by Emily.

These impressive Gothic ruins stand under a mysterious purple sky giving this painting a thoughtful feel to it. Dainty pink flowers add a softness to the dramatic abbey ruins.

Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey is steeped in history dating back to 657AD when a monastery was founded for men and women. The monastery became a very important religious centre in the Anglo-Saxon world. The monastery was confiscated by Henry VIII in 1539 and the remains have been used by sailors as a landmark on the headland.

Bram Stoker was inspired by these gothic ruins when he wrote Dracula in 1987. Count Dracula comes ashore and runs up the 199 steps to the graveyard which lies in the shadows of Whitby Abbey.
