Tower of Refuge Ceramic Tile with Easel

Tower of Refuge ceramic tile and easel by Emily Ward, an artist from the North East, is produced locally in her studio near Newcastle. It has been designed from original art by Emily from her range of art from the Isle of Man.

The landmark Royal National Lifeboat Institution tower stands proud on Emily's art ceramic tile. Sea foam from the Irish Sea laps overs the partially submerged reef

Slight orange tones over the turrets stand out under the cloud filled sky.

Tower of Refuge

The Tower of Refuge is a stone-built castellated structure which was erected on Conister Rock otherwise known as St Mary's Isle in Douglas Bay on the Isle of Man. The main purpose was to afford shelter to mariners shipwrecked on the rock.

The partially submerged reef that the landmark tower stands on, was previously often responsible for the damage and sinking of ships. The tower provided both a visible warning for incoming ships and a refuge for those in distress

The stone tower was constructed in 1832 after William Hillary, the founder of the RNLI, petitioned for a sanctuary to be built there.
