The Bowes Museum Postcard

The Bowes Museum postcard is by North East artist Emily Ward from her art portfolio of County Durham.

A relaxing array of pretty pink and purple flowers line the gardens of the delightful Bowes Museum on Emily's art postcard. The dainty flowers have been splashed with a pop of colourful paint that blends into the swirling skyline.

Sunlight flickers off the glass in the arched windows casting golden tones over the stonework on this historic building.

The Bowes Museum

The Bowes Museum is a magnificent French styled art gallery in the picturesque market town of Barnard Castle in County Durham.

Philanthropists John Bowes a businessman and the son of an Earl, met Joséphine when he bought the Théâtre De Variétés in Paris, where she was an actress. They married in 1852, Josephine had a passion for collecting and became a patron of the arts. She decided to sell John's wedding gift to her, their home in France, to start their Museum project so they could share their love of art with the people of Teesdale, near John’s family home. Sadly neither lived to see the opening of the museum to the public.

The impressive building was designed by John Edward Watson and Jules Pellechet and opened in 1892.
