St Mary’s Church
in Hitchin, Hertfordshire is one of the largest parish churches in England. The church is renowned as a remarkable example of medieval architecture.
The church was listed as a Grade 1 under the name of Church of Saint Mary in 1951.
The present church dates from the 14th and 15th centuries; foundations of an ancient Saxon church were discovered when a new floor was laid in 1911.
The church has been a central part of Hitchin's history and community for over 900 years. Its impressive size reflects the prosperity that Hitchin enjoyed during the medieval wool trade.
