Shakespeare's Globe square open edition print has been designed from original artwork by North East artist Emily Ward. This lovely art print is also available framed.
In Emily's open edition print, the Globe stands proudly at the centre, circular in form, with bright white plaster walls and a dark timber framing. The golden thatched roof catches the light with warmth, while red banners add a formal yet joyful accent. Brick steps and a wrought-iron gate lead into the building.
Above, the sky stretches in broad washes of soft blue and violet, flecked with lighter tones that give texture and depth. This airy backdrop provides contrast and openness. In the foreground, sweeping strokes of pink, yellow, and purple add movement and balance, drawing the viewer into the scene.

Shakespeare's Globe
The Globe Theatre
first opened in 1599, built by Shakespeare’s playing company to provide a permanent stage for their repertory. It was an open-air amphitheater with room for thousands, designed to bring together all layers of London society. Its thrust stage projected into the audience, ensuring close contact between performers and spectators and shaping the interactive style of Elizabethan drama.
The theatre’s history was turbulent: burned down in 1613, rebuilt, and finally destroyed in the mid-1600s when theatre itself was suppressed. Its absence lasted for centuries, but its legend endured. In 1997, a reconstructed Globe opened near the original site, thanks to Sam Wanamaker’s vision. Today it functions as both a theatre and a cultural landmark, reconnecting modern audiences with Shakespeare and the vibrancy of the Renaissance stage.
