History of the Laxey Wheel, Isle of Man

The Laxey Wheel, also called Lady Isabella, stands on the hillside overlooking Laxey village on the Isle of Man. It holds the title of being the biggest functioning waterwheel of its kind in existence, with its original structure still intact. Crafted by Robert Casement, this impressive wheel measures 72 feet and 6 inches in diameter and 6 feet wide, rotating at a steady pace of about three revolutions per minute.

In 1854, the water wheel was built to extract water from the Glen Mooar area of the Great Laxey Mines industrial complex. It was named Lady Isabella after the wife of Lieutenant Governor Charles Hope, who was governing the island at that period. The wheel was restored in 1989 and the Manx National Heritage now oversee the maintenance of the wheel as part of the Great Laxey Wheel & Mines Trail. An image of the wheel is now featured on the back of a bank note issued by the Isle of Man Government.
