Kensington Palace
began its life in 1605 as Nottingham House, a modest mansion on the outskirts of London. In 1689, it was bought by King William III and Queen Mary II, who sought a residence away from the bustle of Whitehall. Renowned architect Sir Christopher Wren was commissioned to expand and modernise the building, transforming it into a comfortable royal home. Over the years, it became the preferred residence of several monarchs and royals, including Queen Anne and George I, marking it as a key site in the early development of Britain's constitutional monarchy.
In the 19th century, Kensington Palace was the birthplace and childhood home of Queen Victoria. After her accession in 1837, the palace shifted away from being the monarch’s principal residence but remained a home for members of the royal family. In the 20th century, it became especially well known as the official residence of Princess Diana, cementing its significance to the public. Today, Kensington Palace serves as both a working royal residence and a public museum, offering visitors a glimpse into centuries of royal life and British history.
