Harland and Wolff Cranes Coaster

Harland and Wolff Cranes coaster by artist Emily Ward has been hand pressed locally onto a FSC rated hardbacked coaster. The coaster has been produced from original art by Emily.

This coaster can also be purchased in a set of four in a gift box.

Emily’s art coaster offers a vibrant and uplifting portrayal of Belfast’s iconic Harland and Wolff cranes, Samson and Goliath. Painted in their familiar bright yellow, the towering gantry cranes rise boldly into a crisp blue sky, with the "H & W" lettering clearly visible. Their strong, industrial form is captured with clean lines and a sense of scale, making them the central focus on this art gift.

In contrast to the cranes’ solid structure, the foreground is alive with colour, filled with wildflowers in soft pinks, blues, yellows and whites. These are painted with playful splashes and dots that scatter across the art gift, creating a light, whimsical feel. The artwork beautifully blends the mechanical and the natural, celebrating Belfast’s engineering legacy while adding a fresh and joyful twist through colour and creativity.

Harland and Wolff Cranes

The Harland and Wolff cranes , Samson and Goliath, have become enduring symbols of Belfast’s industrial past and maritime legacy. Once central to the bustling activity of one of the world’s most renowned shipyards, these towering yellow giants played a key role in the construction and maintenance of countless vessels. Even though large-scale shipbuilding has declined in the city, the cranes remain.

Their bold presence dominates the skyline, particularly in the Titanic Quarter. Today, they stand not only as functional structures but as cultural icons, representing both the history and ongoing transformation of Belfast

Standing at 106 and 96 metres tall, Goliath and Samson are not only engineering marvels but also cultural icons, representing the resilience, history, and identity of Belfast. They are named Goliath and Samson after two powerful biblical figures, symbolising strength and might.
