George Square
in the heart of Glasgow city centre and is overlooked by the impressive City Chambers.
In the early 1700's fortunes were made trading tobacco, cotton and sugar with America. After the industrial revolution Glasgow became famous for shipping and locomotive building. During this period Glasgow was known as the 'Second City of the British Empire'. Many grand and significant buildings were built in the city.
It was at this point that George Square was built from a swampy area of land around 1772.
