Brig o'Doon

Brig o'Doon is a single arched cobbled medieval bridge in Alloway in Ayrshire. Built in the 15th century it plays an integral part in one of Robert Burn's most famous poems, Tom o'Shanter which was published in 1791.

Tom o'Shanter is returning home late and drunk after market day in Ayr. He stumbles across a coven of witches and warlocks in 'Auld Kirk' Alloway. They chase him after he disturbs their gathering. Tom o'Shanter on horseback flees as fast as he can towards the River Doon to cross the bridge. Legend says that a witch will not chase you over water. He barely escapes and the poor horse 'Meg' loses her tail.
