Anglesey Abbey
Located just outside the village of Lode, around six miles from Cambridge, Anglesey Abbey is one of England's finest historic country houses. The site was originally founded in 1135 by King Henry I as the Hospital of St Mary before being converted into an Augustinian priory in the early 13th century. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the surviving buildings were transformed into the Jacobean style house seen today.
The house is a Grade I listed building, while its magnificent gardens were developed by Lord Fairhaven in 1926.
Today, Anglesey Abbey
is cared for by the National Trust and is renowned for its spectacular seasonal gardens, working watermill and remarkable collection of fine art, clocks and furniture assembled by Lord Fairhaven, who created many of the beautiful avenues and landscapes that visitors enjoy today. Despite its name, Anglesey Abbey was never actually an abbey, it was always a priory.
