Brief History of Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle, situated on Castle Rock at the heart of Edinburgh, boasts a rich 3000-year history of human habitation, dating back to the late Bronze Age (circa 900 BC) and continuing uninterrupted to the present day. This enduring legacy positions it as the U.K.'s oldest continuously inhabited location.

Serving as a symbol of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle is home to the nation's Crown Jewels (the Honours of Scotland), the Scottish National War Memorial, the National War Museum, the Royal Regiment of Scotland headquarters, and the Royal Scots and Royal Scots Dragoon Guards regimental associations and museums. It serves as a prominent venue for international and state functions, including the renowned Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo held annually in August. Drawing over one million visitors each year, it stands as Scotland's premier paid tourist attraction.

3 Interesting historical facts about Edinburgh Castle over the centuries.

1. The castle is built on the top of an extinct volcano.

Edinburgh Castle stands proudly on Castle Rock, a volcanic plug estimated to have formed some 350 million years ago. Rising 130 meters above sea level, this historically significant site has witnessed human settlement for over 3,500 years. Its location made it one of the best defended fortresses in Scotland.

2. Oldest building in Edinburgh.

In 1093, Queen Margaret, who would later become a Saint, passed away while residing on Castle Rock. David I, the youngest son of Malcolm III and Margaret, took the initiative to elevate the residence on Castle Rock into a powerful royal castle. Thought to have been completed in 1130, St Margaret’s Chapel situated within the castle walls is documented as the oldest building in Edinburgh.

3. The most besieged castle in Britain.

Edinburgh Castle has always been popular destination, but unlike today the castle gates weren’t always open wide to welcome visitors inside. Over the centuries this castle has been besieged 23 times, making it one of the most attacked castles in Britain.

Brief History of York Minster

York Minster stands as one of the most spectacular cathedrals worldwide.

Since the 7th century, it has served as a focal point of Christianity in the northern regions of England and today continues to flourish as a church deeply connected to the daily rhythm of worship and prayer.

Erected in praise of God, every detail of this ancient structure - from the meticulously crafted stonework to the unparalleled collection of medieval stained glass - narrates the life of Jesus Christ.

York Minster’s Great East Window is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the country, a masterpiece in glass and stone depicting the beginning and end of all things.

Interesting historical facts about York Minster over the centuries.

1. It was the sight of a significant Roman basilica.

Just outside the main entrance of the Minster stands a statue of Emperor Constantine, who was declared Emperor of the Western Roman Empire by his soldiers in York (known as Eboracum at the time) on 25 July 306 AD. Eboracum had served as a significant Roman stronghold in Britain since around 70 AD. Notably, between 208 and 211, Septimus Severus governed the Roman Empire from York, where he also passed away on 4 February 211.

2. The Minster's name dates back to Anglo-Saxon times.

York Minster is formally known as the ‘Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York’. While it functions as a cathedral, housing a bishop’s throne, the term ‘cathedral’ was not coined until after the Norman Conquest. The Anglo-Saxons referred to their significant churches as ‘minsters’.

3. The Minster was struck by a lightning bolt.

On a scorching summer night of 9 July 1984, a thunderous lightning bolt hit the York Minster, setting ablaze its roof until it collapsed by 4 am the next morning. The intense heat from the flames fractured the 7,000 glass pieces of the Rose Window in the South Transept in approximately 40,000 places, yet astonishingly, the window remained intact. This resilience was largely attributed to the meticulous restoration and re-leading efforts carried out twelve years prior.

Benefits of Glass Splashbacks

The glass kitchen splashback has become a popular choice for modern homeowners looking to add a touch of elegance and style to their kitchen. Adding an image to a glass splashback allows creativity and personalisation, making each splashback a one-of-a-kind piece that adds personality to the room.

One of the key benefits of a glass kitchen splashback is its easy maintenance and durability. Unlike traditional tile backsplashes, glass is non-porous and resistant to stains and mould, making it a practical choice for busy kitchens. In addition to being functional, the reflective surface of a glass splashback can also help brighten up the space by reflecting natural light throughout the room. How to fit a Glass Splashback

Installing glass splashbacks is a straightforward process. The following guidelines are suitable for our square or rectangular splashbacks. Tools needed include a silicone gun and the neutral cure silicone provided.

Prepare the wall surface before installing the glass splashback.

Before fixing a glass splashback to the wall ensure that the wall surface is relatively even and free of any obvious bumps and hollows to ensure installation is straightforward. The walls do not have to be perfectly even as a little extra adhesive can be added in hollow areas and less where there may be a slight bump.

Apply silicone adhesive in 'blobs' on the back of the splashback.

Using the neutral cure, solvent free silicone provided, squeeze out equally sized blobs roughly 20mm about 100mm apart. Be careful not to put any blobs too close to the edge when installing glass splashbacks to ensure a fine fit as the silicone may squeeze over the edge of the glass and make a bit of a mess.

Gently press the glass splashback onto the wall and allow the adhesive to cure.

Simply press the glass against the wall applying pressure over the entire surface of the glass. If at any point the glass feels a little 'bouncy' when pressed against the wall then pull it back off and add more silicone at that point. Leave for 24 hours.

Finally, seal around the edges for a clean finish.

After 24 hours seal using the same silicone as used to adhere. Run a bead of clear silicone around the entire perimeter of the glass panel. Using warm soapy water, spray the silicone and remove the excess with your finger for an even seal.

Sycamore Gap Art and Gifts

I never imagined I would be writing a blog post about a landmark that I cherished in my art collection, that is no longer there!

It's truly unbelievable that someone would thoughtlessly choose to destroy the iconic Sycamore tree that was adored by people all over the world and I sincerely hope that efforts will be made to somehow restore the Sycamore Gap back to what it was.

For those who didn't know much about The Sycamore Gap, this is a brief history of this famous landmark.

The Sycamore Gap

The Sycamore Gap is a picturesque location in Northumberland National Park, which was known for its iconic sycamore tree that stood alone in a dramatic dip in Hadrian's Wall. This unique landscape has been featured in several films, including the famous scene in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Nestled within the r ugged beauty of Northumberland National Park, the Sycamore Gap has always been a must-visit destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. This enchanting spot has always offered a captivating blend of natural grandeur and ancient history, making it a truly exceptional sight to behold.

Iconic Sycamore Tree

At the heart of the Sycamore Gap was its most famed feature - the iconic sycamore tree. This solitary tree had become a symbol of the area and is instantly recognisable to those who have seen it in films or photographs. Standing proudly in a dip along Hadrian's Wall, the tree created a striking contrast against the backdrop of the surrounding landscape.

The sycamore tree at the Sycamore Gap had a mythical allure, evoking a sense of mystery and tranquility. Its wide-spreading branches provided shade and a peaceful atmosphere, inviting visitors to relax and soak in the beauty of their surroundings. The tree's graceful form and vibrant green foliage made it a captivating subject for photographers and artists alike.

It won the '2016 England Tree' of the year and was believed to be around 300 years old.

Maryport by Emily Ward Art

Maryport is a quaint harbour town situated in Cumbria. With it's pretty harbour, Roman Museum, aquarium and Maritime museum, to mention just a few of its attractions, Maryport has become a popular tourist town.

Maryport

Maryport was created in the 18th Century by the Senhouse family. The Senhouses of Netherhall were one of the pre-eminent landed gentry families in the English County of Cumberland. Here, they developed a small fishing village into a coal port.

Roman Port at Maryport

Maryport was the site of a Roman port. It was built to complement the harbour at R avenglass just 30 miles to the south

Many of the Roman remains can be seen in the Senhouse Roman Museum, which starte its life as a Royal Naval Reserve Station!

Maryport Lighthouse by Emily Ward Art

Have you ever heard of Maryport Lighthouse? Perhaps you have visited before? It's the oldest cast-iron lighthouse in the entire United Kingdom!

This Grade II Listed Building is absolutely stunning and has a lot of history behind it. In fact, it was first recorded in 1796 !

The Scottish Civil Engineer, Robert Stevenson, who was a famous designer and builder of lighthouses, described its design five years later as "an oil lamp with two reflectors". The lighthouse is approximately 36 feet (11 meters) high and consists of an octagonal metal plinth, column, and lantern on top of a rusticated stone base.

The renowned artist L.S. Lowry used Maryport lighthouse in several of his paintings. Even though the lighthouse no longer serves as a navigation light, it still stands proudly adjacent to the Marina.

It was recently restored and repainted in 2017 as a part of a scheme to refurbish seaside towns. This lighthouse is truly a gem and definitely worth seeing in person!

Alnwick Art - Castle and Gardens

I love Alnwick! A small, yet perfect, market town in Northumberland.

Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle itself is both a Castle and Country House and is the seat of the 12th Duke of Northumberland. The castle was founded way back in the late 11th century by a Norman nobleman Ivo de Vesica from Calvados in Normandy. It is a beautiful grade 1 listed building.

The historic Alnwick Castle in Northumberland combines magnificent medieval architecture and elegant Italianate State Rooms. It is currently the second largest inhabited castle in the country boasting over 950 years of history. A fabulous place to explore.

Alnwick Castle aka Hogwarts

Even if you haven't visited the Castle before you may recognise it! Alnwick Castle has also been known as "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry". It was used as the backdrop during the 2001 Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and the 2002 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

This is where Harry Potter and other students learned to fly their broomsticks and learned to play Quidditch. Thankfully no real damange was caused when Ron crashed the family's car in to the Inner Bailey!

Alnwick Castle by Emily Ward

I have painted this Northumberland treasure nestled amongst bright yellow flowers and rich green grass, creating an uplifting, warm feel to it with the vibrant colours of spring.

A day to Alnwick must also include a visit to Alnwick Gardens . The garden is described as one of the world's most ambitious gardens. You may need a day or two to see the whole garden. The gardens were designed by Jacques and Peter Wirtz and has so much to see and do. Three of my favourites include:

The largest medieval stained glass in the country can be found in the magnificent Great East Window of York Minster, also known as the "Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York." Clifford's Tower York

Since its construction in 1245 by order of William 1 as a symbol of dominance over the Viking city of Jorvik, now known as York, Clifford's Tower has stood proudly as a prominent landmark overlooking the city. With a rich history spanning over a millennium, this monument holds a revered position in York's landscape. Situated on a raised mound that previously housed a timber keep constructed by William the Conqueror but destroyed in a fire in 1190, the tower stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of York's past.

Introducing a new piece of art - Fountains Abbey

Fountains Abbey Yorkshire

One of my latest pieces of art which I have added to my website is Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire. Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Park have been an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986.

The impressive site in Yorkshire includes the ruins of the largest Cistercian monastery in the UK. It is a splendid Georgian formal water garden, and a medieval deer park.

Fountains Abbey is situated near the town of Ripon in the Yorkshire Dales.

Fountains Abbey - Natural Springs

The name 'Fountains Abbey' comes from the large number of natural springs in the area. The monks were never ever short of water.

The abbey ruins are now part of the elegant 18th-century water garden at Studley Royal park, water still continues to play an important part in the story of Fountains

Design

In Emily's painting, the monastic ruins stand proud behind a colourful field filled with pink, blue and yellow dainty flowers. A soft yellow hue glistens over the grassy meadow.

Emily has given these magnificent abbey ruins her characteristic splashes of colour.

Tones of lilac flicker through the sky which is speckled with splashes of yellow and pink paint.

Last weekend I headed to Newcastle Racecourse to show off my North East Gift Products. My Artwork on various products. I had such a busy weekend and absolutely loved meeting so many of my existing and of course new customers. As it is #WorldProductDay today (Wednesday 24th May) I thought I would talk about my range.

Living North Exhibition Newcastle

The Living North Live Spring Exhibition is an annual event that takes place at Newcastle Racecourse. A fantastic venue. This exhibition is a celebration of all things home and garden-related, and it's an event that you really won't want to miss if you're a fan of interior design, gardening, shopping, and food.

The exhibition brings together a wide variety of vendors, designers, and experts who are passionate about their crafts. You'll find everything from bespoke furniture and handcrafted ceramics to beautiful garden sculptures and unique home accessories.

There are also plenty of food and drink stalls, showcasing some of the best local produce and artisanal products.

Living North Variety

One of the things that makes the Living North Live exhibition so fantastic is the sheer variety of things to see and do.

The thing I love most about exhibiting at Living North is that I get to meet so many of my customers! Not that I get a chance to chat to everyone, as you can imagine. It gets quite busy. I just love to when I can. For someone to say "hi I bought my kitchen splashback from you" or "hi I've been following you on Facebook" - gives me such a lovely feeling and makes being there so worthwhile.

There really is nothing quite like meeting the people who appreciate your art. I get to meet new people too who have never heard of me! And that's fantastic too.

Handpressed

Our team hand press the mugs here at our Studio in North Tyneside. This way each item can be carefully checked and go through a rigorous quality check. As they are individually printed you may find a very slight variation in colour tones, but we still prefer to use this method to provide the very best quality.

Our cups are 85mm high x 75mm in diameter with a brim capacity of 300ml. The perfect size for a decent cuppa! We took so much time selecting the right materials and considering all different sizes and shapes.

Placing a Kitchen Splashback Order from Emily Ward Art

Once Emily has your measurements it's time to choose your piece of art. You may choose a square painting but your splashback needs to be a rectangle. This is not a problem. Emily will resize the painting to fit your space. Portrait, landscape or square she will select the best composition for you. The original art is then digitally transferred onto the glass. Emily uses 6mm toughened glass with a 1.5mm bevelled edge. The glass used is heat resistant to over 400C. It also comes with a kit to fix it onto the wall.

With over 1000 years of political, religious and social history this Romanesque style cathedral was built originally to house the Shrine of St Cuthbert. Today Durham Cathedral is recognised as one of the world’s great cathedrals as its Norman architecture has mainly survived intact.

Construction started in 1093 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Durham Cathedral's relics include: Saint Cuthbert's, transported to Durham by Lindisfarne monks in the 800s; Saint Oswald's head and the Venerable Bede's remains.

Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond is in the heart of The Trossachs National Park, less than an hours drive from Glasgow. It is referred to as the boundary between Central Scotland and Highlands. With a surface area of 71 km2 it is the largest lake in Great Britain. The rolling hills are filled with purple heather, which are also known to represent bravery, courage and protection from danger.

This area fascinates Emily with its snow capped mountains, wild scenery, charming villages and plenty of forests to hike through.

Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey guards from the top of the East Cliff over the town of Whitby in North Yorkshire. It is an English Heritage site and you can find out more about it here . Whitby Abbey was founded as a monastery in 657AD and then became a Benedictine abbey. Henry VIII confiscated the abbey in 1539, under the dissolution of the Monasteries. Whitby Abbey has influenced many artists and writers , including Bram Stoker in 1890 who set part of Dracula at the abbey and Caedmon, the first named poet in the English language

Jesmond Dene

Jesmond Dene is a narrow wooded valley and is one of the most popular parks in Newcastle Upon Tyne. It follows the River Ouseburn between South Gosforth, Heaton and Jesmond.

Enjoy the tranquillity and peacefulness of the dene whilst using the many paths and bridges. The dene is home to many woodland birds, many exotic trees and shrubs, wildlife and flowers.

Lord Armstrong and his wife first laid out plans for the wooded park to be known as Jesmond Dene during the 1860's. The original design was intended to reflect a rural setting featuring woodland, waterfalls, crags and pools.

Lord Armstrong donated the park to the people of Newcastle in 1883 and it opened the following year.

Forth Railway Bridge

The Forth Bridge was opened in 1890 after 7 years of construction work. The overall length of the bridge is 2,467 meters and the highest point on the bridge is 110 metres above the water.

It took 53,000 tonnes of steel and 6.5million rivets to construct the Forth Rail Bridge.

The iconic Forth Rail Bridge was the world's first major steel structure. To this day it still holds the record for being the world's longest cantilever bridge.

The Forth Rail Bridge crosses the Firth of Forth, just 9 miles outside of Edinburgh.

Around 200 trains cross the bridge daily, carrying 3 million passengers a year.

240,000 litres of paint are required to paint the Forth Bridge.

George Square

George Square is at the heart of the city centre in Glasgow. Originally built as a grand residential area, it now is a busy public space.

Work began on transforming the swampy area in 1772, to create this plush residential area which would have private gardens. George Square was opened in 1787 and was named after King George III.

There are 1 2 statues in George Square ranging from Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Queen Victoria. There is however not one of King George III. There was to be a statue, but after the prosperous tobacco trade with America slowed down, the plan for the statue disappeared.

Glaswegian architect William Young designed the impressive City Chambers. Work began in 1882 and Queen Victoria opened the building in 1888.

The city chambers are said to have more marble than that of the Vatican. There is a large number of marble floors within the building.

The Kelpies

The Kelp ies standing 30 meters high were designed by Glasgow based sculptor Andy Scott. They were completed in 2013 after 10 years in the making. Located in The Helix, a parkland between Falkirk and Grangemouth, right next to the Forth and Clyde Canal.

A kelpie is a shape-changing aquatic spirit of Scottish legend.

The horse head statues pay homage to the working horses of Scotland. The horses used to pull the barges along the canal and they worked in the fields where they proudly stand now.

Tyne Bridge Art

A popular feature in Emily’s bright and vibrant style are her Tyne Bridge Art pieces. Famously situated in the heart of Newcastle, this iconic bridge is a popular attraction in the North East.

Constructed in the late 1920s, the arch bridge reaches over the River Tyne, linking Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead. It is ranked the tenth tallest structure in the city and the most celebrated of the seven bridges.

The Tyne Bridge was the world’s longest single span bridge at the time, built by Dorman Long and Co. of Middlesbrough. A few years later the same firm went on to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Emily Ward is very proud to reveal her new Tommy Statue Artwork. Emily was approached by many past customers requesting that she painted the famous Tommy Statue.

History

The Tommy statue is a statue situated in Seaham. Tommy is a great war soldier by artist Ray Lonsdale. It sits pride of place on the seafront of Seaham. The statue is made of bronze coloured steel. It weighs 1.2 tonnes.

Local residents are very proud of the Tommy Statue and it has been said that the statue has attracted thousands of tourists which has boosted the local economy. Originally Tommy was a temporary display.

The local residents loved the statue so much they raised the money to buy it. The amount needed to buy the statue was £102,000. The residents fundraised to raise the money

About Northumberlandia

Northumberlandia is a massive sculpture created by Artist Charles Jencks. It is set in 19 hectares of parkland. The sculpture is in the Cramlington area in Northumberland County. Northumberlandia is made from 1.5 million tonnes of earth. The earth has been taken from Shotton Surface mine which sits right next to the sculpture. She is 34 meters high and 400 meters long.

The History behind Penshaw Monument

Built in 1844. Penshaw Monument in honour of the Earl of Durham whose name was John George Lambton. Lambton, Governor General of British North America and an author of the Durham report on the future governance of American territories.

About Penshaw Monument

Many people South of the Tyne see the Penshaw Monument in the distance and reminds them of home. The Monument sits alone on the top of a hill. Hundreds of steps lead up to it’s entrance.

Penshaw monument could be mistaken for a Greek monument. It has eighteen columns and looks very like a traditional Greek Monuments.

Emily has created a painting rich in colour which reflects a sunset behind Penshaw Monument. Again Emily has used her vivid colour palette. Rich reds, oranges and yellows depict the painting. The brick work is an orange colour as well. This reflects the colours used in the sunset.

Angel of the North Art

Angel of the North Art is one of Emily’s favourites. She has painted many paintings of the the Angel each unique in composition and colour.

About the Angel of the North

The Angel of the North was built in 1998. It was designed by Antony Gormley. The Angel is a huge contemporary sculpture located in Gateshead. The sculpture towers over the motorway. It is a massive 20meters x 54 meters and is said to be the largest Angel sculpture in the world.

The Angel of the North is made from heavy rusting steel. The steel represents the Steel Industry which was the backbone of the North East economy.

The people of the North East have been delighted when the Angel has been ‘dressessed up.’ There are famous photographs of the Angel of the North with a huge Alan Shearer Newcastle United football shirt on.

Angel of the North Art with Flowers

This painting came about via a commission. It was commissioned by a local lady who was marrying a gentleman from Italy. The idea was Emily would paint two pictures. One of the Angel of the North, the other of an Italian village.

The two paintings were then made into Tiles with Easels and given to all the guests at the wedding. They also surprised the Best Man and Bridesmaids with large framed tiles of the paintings.

This painting was Emily’s first of the Angel of the North . She originally painted the picture to display in the North East Art Collective . A local gallery located in Eldon Garden, Newcastle. As soon as the painting was put up on the walls it was sold.

St Mary’s Lighthouse Art is one of Emily’s favourites. She has painted the Lighthouse for so many different people. Each person or couple has wanted to capture St Mary’s Lighthouse in a different way.

St Mary’s Lighthouse is located on the edge of Whitley Bay. It is a focus point of the area and has been used as a venue for many different occasions. The Lighthouse has hosted wedding receptions. Emily is the artist that many people have turned to paint St Mary’s as a keepsake to remember the event.

Sycamore Gap Painting

Emily Ward has added her collection of Sycamore Gap paintings to the website. Sycamore Gap is based in Northumberland in the North East of England. You can find it within a dip in the ever long Hadrian's wall.

History of Sycamore Gap

The tree is a Sycamore tree. Rumour is it that the tree is over two hundred years old. Apparently there were more trees which stood next to the Sycamore tree but over the years they have been removed. Nobody knows exactly sure why the trees have been removed. Some suspect they have been removed for game keeping purposes.

The website proudly displays four paintings of Sycamore Gap. The first being Sycamore Gap in the winter.

This beautiful painting gives a side view to the tree. The composition of the painting is put together so the looker feels they are walking along Hadrian's Wall.

Emily has still managed to add her bright colours into the painting. The sky is a mix of pinks, blues and yellows with lots of white snowflakes.

Emily Ward has created a collection of Newcastle art prints. After moving to the North East in the early 70’s Emily was infatuated by the buildings and structures in Newcastle.

Emily’s mum and dad were both artists and encouraged Emily to draw and paint the buildings in and around Newcastle. She loved the history and colours of the buildings in Newcastle city centre. Without knowing this was the beginning of the Newcastle art prints.

Tyne Bridge Newcastle Art Prints

When Emily started her business Emily Ward Art she began painting pictures of the North East. She soon concentrated on Newcastle and the Tyne Bridge. This painting became the first Newcastle Art Print.

She painted two famous paintings of the Tyne Bridge. One bright and beautiful with flowers. The other a more sullen colour palette. The two Tyne Bridge paintings are part of the Newcastle art prints.

The Baltic Art Centre

Emily also created an image of the Baltic Art Centre which is also in Newcastle. Well strictly speaking it is on the Gateshead side of the river.

The Baltic Arts Centre is a large building which was an old flour mill. It has been refurbished into a striking new building. The painting of the Baltic Arts Centre is similar to the Tyne Bridge with flowers painting.

The Sage Gateshead

Again the Sage Gateshead is very central to Newcastle. Like the Baltic Arts Centre it is situated on the Gateshead side of the river. Emily Ward has created many paintings but her Tyne Bridge Art is the public's favourite. Emily has two distinctive images of the Tyne bridge.

Paintings of the Tyne Bridge

Emily’s first painting of the Tyne Bridge was a mixture of warm tones. The painting depicted the Tyne Bridge face on, as if you were sailing up the river Tyne.

She has cantered the bridge between two trees. These trees are no ordinary trees but make believe trees from Emily’s imagination. The trees allow Emily to add her distinctive style. Splashes of browns and peaches are used to represent the leaves and flowers on the trees.

It is unusual for Emily’s style but this Tyne Bridge painting is darker than normal. The dark silhouette of the Tyne Bridge adds an eerie atmosphere to the painting.

The Tyne Bridge with flowers is very different from her original Tyne Bridge painting. The Tyne Bridge with flowers is an unusual image. Emily has chosen to mix bright coloured flowers against the stark steel structure of the Tynebridge.

The painting of the Tyne Bridge with flowers also has an uplifting pink sky. This painting is a joyful painting which is often purchased by women. The original painting of the Tyne Bridge is mainly purchased by men.

Inspiration

I have lived in the Newcastle area for over 45 years. So needless to say Newcastle plays a very important role in my life. Inspired by the Newcastle architecture and the colours I have created a Newcastle Art Print collection.

Tyne Bridge Newcastle

In my opinion the Tyne Bridge is the most iconic landmark in the North East. When I am traveling home on the train I know I am home when the train crosses the Tyne Bridge. I have heard many friends and family say this. The Newcastle Art print I have used for my collection is named Tyne Bridge with Flowers . The flowers are of great contrast to the overpowering steel structure of the Tyne Bridge.

Angel of the North Newcastle Art Print

As most of you know the Angel of the North is actually in Gateshead. I have decided to add it to my Newcastle Art Print collection as it is located within five miles of Newcastle city centre.

Again I have mixed flowers in and around the overpowering steel structure of the Angel. The flowers I have chosen to paint are poppies. The bright red poppies light up the brown, bronze statue. This Newcastle Art print is called Angel of the North with Poppies.

The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

Again located on the South side of the river Tyne. The Baltic was a local Flour Mill which was derelict for years before being redesigned into an art gallery.

I have chosen to add the Baltic into my Newcastle Art Print collection simply because the building is so beautiful. The exterior of the building remains the same. The interior has been totally redesigned to create the contemporary art gallery.

My Newcastle Art print of the Baltic has been very popular. The contrast of the pink delicate flowers goes well with the red brick building.

North East Christmas Card Collection

I am really excited to announce the launch of the new North East Christmas card collection. The North East Christmas card collection is a collection of six iconic North East landmarks.

After a lot of thought and research I decided to create my six Christmas cards from my most popular paintings sold in 2020.

Angel of the North Christmas Card

The Angel of the North was an easy choice for me. The Angel is one of the most iconic landmarks in the North East.

Based in Gateshead there have been a lot of opinions about the Angel. And everyone likes to have their say. Some people love it. Some people hate it.

Needless to say I love i t and it has been one of my most popular paintings .

Tyne Bridge Christmas Card

The Tyne Bridge is the most recognisable bridge in Newcastle. It is a huge steel structure which joins the North and the South side of the Tyne.

I have been commissioned to paint so many paintings of the Tyne Bridge over the years. I have chosen the dark moody image of the bridge this new Christmas Card Collection.

The Herd Groyne Christmas Card

The Herd Groyne is located on the south side of the river in South Shields. It is often described as the ‘Little Red Lighthouse’ by people North and South of the Tyne.

The lighthouse steers ships and boats away from the Black Middens rocks on the Tyne. Emily is based in North Shields and when she walks along the fish quay she can see Herd Groyne in its full glory warning the ships away.

Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle is one of the most famous castles in the North East of England. Thousands of tourists flock to view the magnificent castle which is situated next to prize winning beaches.

I am sure that the Bamburgh Castle Christmas Card will be popular to all of my Northumberland customers.

Blyth Beach Huts Christmas Card

The best selling painting I have ever created was that of the Blyth Beach Huts. So I simply had to add it into the North East Christmas card collection. The bright beach huts add colour and brightness to the industrial area of Blyth.

St Mary’s Lighthouse Christmas Card

St Mary’s is located just off the Whitley bay coastline. Whitley Bay attracts thousands of visitors and many visit St Mary’s Lighthouse. My painting of St Mary’s lighthouse is a scene of snow and splashing waves. Very festive.

Another beautiful landmark is the Spanish City. This impressive Victorian white building with its famous dome roofing also sits on the edge of the Whitley Bay coast line. After years of refurbishment the building has reopened housing a Champagne Bar and an up market Fish and Chip shop.

There are also other shops in the venue. One named the Love of the North. The Love of the North is a small art and gift shop. The Story of Emily Wards Painting of Tynemouth Longsands Beach

The painting of Tynemouth Longsands was originally commissioned by a local lawyer. If you look closely at the painting you can see two small figures hugging on the beach. The customer who commissioned the painting wanted the painting to give to her husband for their wedding anniversary. The two figures represent both of them walking along the beach just after he had just proposed to her.

Tynemouth has lots of amazing iconic sites. The Priory Tynemouth sits on the edge of the Tynemouth Cliffs. There are two piers , one in Tynemouth which attracts local fishermen who fish on the edges of the pier.

The two piers make the entrance to the river Tyne.Their bright lights show the boats and the ships the safest route. It is not unusual to see huge ships packed with tourists travelling across the North Sea to Amsterdam.

Living in Tynemouth as a Tynemouth Artist.

Tynemouth Artist Emily Ward was brought up in Tynemouth. She moved from London in the early 70’s. Her mum and Dad were both practising artists in London but finding work was hard.

Artists move from London to Tynemouth

Emily’s parents eventually decided to move to Tynemouth after her dad was offered employment at Sunderland University as a lecturer.

Emily’s mum and Dad soon became known as the Tynemouth Artists. They based their paintings on the rough sea and Tynemouth landscape. They soon settled into the Tynemouth lifestyle and made lots of new friends who were also artists based in Tynemouth.

Painting artistic images of Tynemouth

Emily was brought up surrounded by their paintings of Tynemouth and even as a young child started to copy her mum and dad’s style, composition and colour.

Going forward 40 years Emily’s painting of Tynemouth Pier was one of her first commissions as an artist from Tynemouth.

Her skill lies in the techniques she uses to depict the rough sea at Tynemouth. Her splashing technique adds movement to the waves which crash against the walls of Tynemouth Pier .

North Tyneside artist Emily Ward shares her secrets of who and what inspires her.

Inspiration North Tyneside artist - Emily, was born into a family of artists. Her mother and father were both practising artists. They taught her art in various places around London and then the North East of England.

Inspiration North Tyneside Artist - Emily’s mother Annette Ward

Annette’s style is bright, bold abstract shapes. Often her paintings are on 6 foot by 6 foot canvas with vivid colors protruding from them.

She uses giant size paint brushed and large oil bars packed with vivid pigment that almost illuminate the canvas.

Emily has definitely been inspired by her mum and her work proves it. Emily often uses striking colours in her paintings. She uses local scenes around North Tyneside for inspiration.

She also uses colour taken from flowers in and around North Tynesside. These colours are a mix of primary and secondary colours. Each bright, bold, vivid and beautiful.

The mural covers the wall of a long winding corridor. The corridor is used by hundreds of patients, doctors and nurses who come from afar and all around North East of England.

Emily also likes to paint big and has done many paintings for her local hospitals most of which are based in North Tyneside.

Because she is an artist based in North Tyneside Emily has chosen to support her local area and donates artwork in and around the North Tyneside area .

Emily also painted murals in Belfast after graduating form Ulster University.

North Tyneside Artist Lockdown Week

As a North Tyneside Artist I decided to write down what I do in a week? How are you finding lockdown?

It has been 10 week's since the Country went in to lockdown and I am finding so much busier than I thought I would be.

Last Friday I had a Social Media training session with Amanda from North East Social Media . We talked about blogging and what I could blog about. And so I started to create bullet points so I could remember what I do in a week.

A week in the life of a North Tyneside Artist

Friday, following my training I had the wonderful task of updating my Accounts! Oh yes, I've found that as a business owner I don't just get to do what I love. ie being a North Tyneside Artist. I also get to be an accountant!

Following the not so enjoyable accounts tasks I headed off to our local post office to deliver orders. This takes a little longer than usual, because of social distancing. I imagine like me you are getting quite used to this now.

Next, it was a quick walk back home and prep for the week ahead. I love lists. They keep me sane :)

On Saturday, I do try to make some kind of difference so it does feel like a weekend. But it's hard, right? Anyone else feel that it can sometimes be a bit like groundhog day?

So Saturday I had a visit from my brother and went for a socially distanced walk with a good friend.

Sunday was a family day. I spent a couple of hours on my marketing, planning for the week ahead, but only after some family time. For yes, the glamorous life of North Tyneside Artist includes house keeping, cooking, cleaning and everything else us normal mums do.

The rest of the week

The rest of the week consisted of

packaging orders and posting them
updating the website (which I tend to do on a daily basis)
celebrating my daughter's birthday
attending Social Media Angels school
playing with editing apps to create video's for my social media
stock taking

This week's proofs

Do keep an eye on the website, as this week I have proofed a new image of the Transporter Bridge and a new poster both of which should be on the shop this week.

As you can see not much time for me, but I'm not complaining. I like a routine and am happy now that I have one, even if it is slightly different to my normal routine, I have one. I can't wait to have everything organised so this North Tyneside artist can get a paintbrush back in her hand.

Well, maybe it is before Hallowe'en

I know , I know. Why do people talk about Christmas and presents and lists so early? Some people start their Christmas preparations in January but for some people it's a nightmare to hear the 'C' word before December 1st.
For makers, craftspeople and artists though.... we've been working on bringing you delights and treats at Christmas while we chomp chocolate eggs, rub on the sun lotion and pop in the plastic fangs.
Rest assured we are ready and have developed some really special gift offers and new products. Watch this space.
